13-Year-Old Makes Umpiring Debut Alongside Father at High School Baseball Tournament

Albuquerque, NM505 Baseball LLC, a New Mexico-based umpire assigning organization

ree

dedicated to addressing the ongoing shortage of baseball officials, is proud to announce the debut of 13-year-old Jose Natividad III as a baseball umpire. Jose will officiate at the Five Tool Baseball High School Tournament on June 27 at the Altamont Little League Complex, joined on the field by his father, Jose Natividad, a veteran varsity high school umpire.

Jose III has trained with the Wounded Warrior Umpire Academy and Protect The Game, a national program supporting the development of young officials. John Quick, clinician for Protect The Game and coordinator at 505 Baseball, remarked:

“As I observed Jose’s progress and ability to absorb instruction, it became clear—he’s a natural.”

John Quick coordinated with Ryan Brewer, New Mexico Director of Five Tool Baseball, to grant Jose this opportunity.

“We’re thrilled to welcome a young umpire who’s trained with some of the best. What’s better than a father and son sharing the field and love for the game?” said Brewer. “Not everyone can be Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr., but this comes close.”

The father-son duo will officiate multiple games:

  • Friday, June 27: 8:00 AM & 10:15 AM at Altamont Little League (Northeast Albuquerque)

  • Saturday, June 28: 8:00 AM & 10:15 AM at Jennifer Riordan Sports Complex (Northwest Albuquerque)

Reflecting on the experience, Jose Natividad Sr. shared:

“Some of my best childhood memories are of playing baseball with my father. Now, umpiring alongside my son is incredibly meaningful. Watching him earn respect on the field at such a young age fills me with pride.”
